Scaling and Root Planing

At Cleveland Smile Center we refer to this procedure as “Advanced Gum Therapy”.

​During careful examination by the dentist and dental hygienist, we can determine the severity of the periodontal gum disease. Prior to treatment, will use periodontist methods of measuring the gum pockets around your teeth.

Scaling and Root Planing is a simple, non-surgical approach to treating periodontal gum disease. We use this treatment to strengthen the gums around your teeth and prevent further bone loss.

Scaling is when all the plaque and tartar (hardened plaque) above and below the gumline is removed, cleaning all the way down to the bottom of the pocket.

Root planing is the process of smoothing out your teeth roots to help your gums reattach to your teeth.

Scaling and root planing may take more than one visit to complete and could require a local anesthetic to numb certain areas. This makes your treatment comfortable and painless while in the dental chair
